One of the major factors of developments in products hasn’t been manufacturing innovations but design. Whilst anyone can argue that technology and design advancements move together, it is at the same time quick to see how design dominates consumer habits. Having said that, this is not anything new since industrialized production enabled manufacturers to offer cheap products where the bonus was on design rather than functionality. Case in point, as with real online casinos, the paper clothing of the 60s were inexpensive and largely of a poor quality still for some fashion conscience consumers they were must have wardrobe items. This process carries on to this present day. Cell phone builders continually push and pull on the dichotomy of design vs functionality. Lots of designers choose understated designs and rely instead on feature development. Many others choose to offer fewer features and instead focus on design, at times even collaborating with celebrities.

With such a attention given to design instead of functionality, it is easy to regard technology products as simply design orientated but it’s also good to not forget that such devices are meant to have functional benefits as well. When you are picking a product to buy there is always three elements that you need to think about – cost, design and features. At times you might wish to spend more for features and at other times for design. Other times functionality and design are incorporated. Apple’s product design ethos is an excellent example of design converging with technology.

If you always buy products based on their look then you should really start to consider the functional element as well. While it might be tempting to get the trendiest design, it may not be the best performing. You should really always consider the functionality of the product and how you will be using it. There is little point of purchasing a really flash computer if all you will be doing is sending emails with it or surfing the web.

Thus, when purchasing new products, always think about how or why you need it. An example of this is e-book readers, such as the Amazon Kindle. These have practical uses in real life. E.g., a lot of airlines now limit passengers to a single piece of luggage. An e-book reader is a lot smaller than your average book and you are able to take plenty more books with you on holiday.

Phones have also greatly improved their technology features. You may be able to use your mobile phone for all of your multi-media needs. Many now have large amounts of memory enabling you to save videos, pictures and music. cell phones now have digital cameras too, meaning you won’t have to buy a separate, pricey camera. The Internet is not any different. Plenty of sites have been created with functionality and usability in mind. You are now able to find websites which have been developed to allow you to plan your online time more effectively. They vary from a bookmarks manager, password safes and personalized homepage.

A bookmarks manager can really save you time and can transform the way you work. Unfortunately, many of them have a more functional style. It will be intriguing to see how they evolve as more of us come to expect functionality that is presented in a well designed and aesthetic end product.

In addition, Xperia S, the ultimate HD smartphone, is now shipping to markets across the globe. Xperia P and Xperia U will be available to consumers globally in the second quarter of this year.

Xperia NXT series

These smartphones have intriguing design features including the “transparent element”, a band that encircles the base of the phone and also integrates invisible antenna components. The transparent element illuminates when receiving calls, texts and notifications.

The new User Interface (UI) follows the same design principles and enhances the Android experience.

Xperia P and Xperia U boast Reality Display powered by Mobile BRAVIA Engine, along with fast capture to take the camera from sleep to snap in a little over a second with a single key press. Both smartphones come with 1 GHz dual-core processors.

Xperia P

With a full aluminium unibody design, Xperia P debuts WhiteMagic display technology from Sony for the first time on a smartphone. WhiteMagic technology delivers the brightest viewing experience; whether at the beach or on the ski slopes. Smart power efficiency automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen to the surroundings to conserve battery life.

The new SmartDock, exclusively for Xperia P, offers simple connectivity to multiple screens, turning the smartphone into an entertainment hub for the living room. Using a TV remote control consumers can easily navigate their smartphone’s media content to watch their HD videos, the latest movies or favourite TV shows on the big screen. With USB support in the SmartDock, they can also use a wireless keyboard and mouse.

The phone launches on Android platform 2.3 (Gingerbread), with an upgrade to Android platform 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) during the second quarter of 2012.

Xperia U

In Xperia U the transparent element illuminates to match the colour of photos viewed in the gallery or the album art of music tracks currently playing. Xperia U can also be personalised with exchangeable caps and themes to reflect consumers’ personality and mood.

Smartphone apps that are offered for free to customers, and funded by advertising within the app could have a hidden cost for the users – in the form of much faster battery drain.

Analysis by Purdue University, USA of Android and Windows Phone based devices found that as much as three-quarters of the power drain by a mobile app could be put down to the in-app adverts.

Report author Abhinav Pathak said that app developers need to be more aware of the energy drain that 3rd-party plug-ins such as advertising or usage analytics can generate.

In the case of one hugely popular app, the Angry Birds game, their research suggested that only a fifth of the energy consumption was devoted to playing the game itself. Nearly half went to the location based tracker that is need to serve localised adverts.

The researchers were able to monitor the battery drain by modifying the handsets then running the apps on them. It was not possible to test Apple iPhones due to OS restrictions.

Apple could be taking a cue from frenemy Samsung with its next iOS device, offering a gadget that’s a bit larger than most cell phones, but about half the size of a tablet.

According to Japanese Apple news site Macotakara, Apple’s working with LCD suppliers to get a 5-inch panel with a pixel density high enough to be able to call it a Retina Display. That’s according to “a reliable Chinese source,” the site said.

That smaller device would arrive sometime next year, Macotakara suggested, and sport either a 1,600 by 960 pixel or 1,280 by 960 pixel resolution — either of which would be a first for an iOS device.

This is just the latest in a series of reports claiming Apple’s working on iOS device that falls somewhere between the iPhone and the iPad. Earlier this month, a report from the Korea Times cited an unnamed Samsung official saying Apple this year would be releasing an iPad with a 7.85-inch screen. That’s as opposed to the current iPad’s 9.7-inch display. Days before that, there was a report from VentureBeat saying Apple was eyeing a slightly-smaller 7.1-inch panel instead.

Muddying up both these claims is the idea that these panels could actually end up being for a next-generation smartphone instead. A report from Reuters last week suggested as much, claiming that Apple was vying to pick up a slightly smaller 4.6-inch display for a new crop of iPhones with screens larger than the 3.5-inch panel the iPhone’s shipped with since its introduction.
